The video game Fortnite remains as the highest-earning game of 2019 thanks to its growing popularity since its introduction in 2017. The evidence is clear as Fornite generated $1.8 billion in revenue in that year alone, beating out all other free-to-play games. Furthermore, Fornite even successfully surpass the revenue generated by premium games that have to be purchased to play. The top two premium games, FIFA 19 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, earning $786 million and $645 million combined still generated lesser revenue as compared to Fortnite.
According to SuperData, Fornite’s revenue decreased by 25% since 2018, which made their achievement in 2019 more remarkable despite the decrease. As a free-to-play game, monetization is primarily through in-game purchasable items, consistent updates, and the selling of combat passes. Experts gave credit to the game for being hugely successful in turning players into spenders. Despite another game competitor League of Legends which have more players, Fortnite players on PC are twice as likely to spend on in-game items compared to MOBA players according to SuperData.
Additionally, Fortnite also carries out many crossovers with popular pop culture franchises such as Star Wars and Avengers, which is well received by its community. In a recent collaboration with Disney to promote the new movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Fornite revealed an exclusive trailer of the movie in their game. With 250 million players and a growing community worldwide, Fornite’s creator Epic Games is set to continue disrupting the gaming industry for the next decade.
